LEVI’S® VINTAGE CLOTHING X CENTRAL STATION DESIGN

The Spring/Summer 2021 Levi’s® Vintage Clothing collection pays homage to the explosive music scene of Manchester, England in the late 1980s. Visually, no one is more essential to that musical moment than Central Station Design, the design studio behind many of the album covers and posters of the era.

To celebrate this iconic and influential group of artists and designers, Levi’s® Vintage Clothing re-imagines the artwork of five iconic Happy Mondays records as a lineup of special edition T-shirts, a hoodie, and a jacket.

It was on Happy Mondays’ first full length album, Squirrel and G-Man Twenty Four Hour Party People Plastic Face Carnt Smile that Central Station first created the album art that would become the inspiration for this project. On the 12” cardboard album sleeve itself was a graphic art image of pastry cakes and parfaits topped with strawberries. Slipped over that was a 12” clear plastic slipcover with the album text.

In honor of this iconic artwork, and to celebrate the creativity of Central Station, Levi’s® Vintage Clothing is releasing four limited edition 1980s Graphic Tees, each of which recreates the art of four Happy Mondays records. The entire collection was created in partnership with Central Station, who worked closely with Levi’s® Vintage Clothing to ensure that each tee perfectly replicates the iconic Happy Mondays albums. The tees, all ‘80s style long sleeve white tees, are printed with an image of one of the four Happy Mondays records, and then are folded and placed into a plastic slipcover with the corresponding album text. It’s an exact replica of the classic record, only in the form of a Levi’s® Vintage T-shirt.

In addition to the tees, there’s the Freaky Parka, an oversized zip parka featuring graphics from “Freaky Dancin’” that’s been made into a multicolor repeat pattern. And last but not least, there’s the 1980s Hoodie featuring a blue and green block pattern that replicates Central Station’s artwork for Happy Mondays’ first ever 12” single, the 1985 “Forty-Five EP,” popularly known as the “Delightful EP.”

These special pieces are Levi’s® Vintage Clothing’s tribute to Happy Mondays, Central Station Design and the independent record label that defined a generation — Factory Records.
