LEVI’S® MADE & CRAFTED® Made In Japan Collection

Continuing Levi’s®️ Made & Crafted®️’s commitment to quality and craftsmanship, we are partnering with legendary Japanese craftsmen to curate a custom Levi’s®️ Made In Japan collection. Inspired by the beauty and meticulousness of Japanese crafts, we aim to pursuit the finest designs so each piece is made to last.

Denim manufacturing was first introduced to Japan by the United States, putting Levi’s®️ at the forefront during the early days of modern Japanese pop culture, subsequently building a thriving local denim industry. Half a century has passed and Levi’s®️ Made & Crafted®️ still treasures its original mindset to find the most dedicated distributor and craftsmen of traditional fabrics. The result is refined touches added to classic models. Delicate craftsmanship paired with cutting edge techniques creates a collection that is both unique and durable. Our fabric after-treatment reveals the subtle texture and changes in materials, elevating Levi’s®️ Made In Japan collection to a true art.

For Spring and Summer 2021, Levi’s® invited Japan’s new-generation stylist Masataka Hattori to revamp Levi’s® Made in Japan®, injecting a new aesthetics to the series. Hattori took the idiom “Green is born out of blue” as his core concept and, through the same pair of Levi’s® Made in Japan® jeans, gave us interpretations of both classic and modern styles. This new collaboration brings us countless looks with our signature “Classic Fit” jeans.

SUPERIOR CRAFTSMANSHIP

It all starts with premium fabric. Working with Kaihara Mill, a renowned Japanese manufacturer with a number of those prized vintage shuttle looms, we produced small-batch styles in limited quantities – in part because the vintage machines used can only produce a certain amount of fabric in a given time. They are known for their unique in-house rope dying technique, the key in creating Levi’s® Made In Japan collection’s signature blue selvedge. This limited fabric is then processed by sewing and processing company SAAB. Every step of the construction - cutting, sewing, colour dying and washing - is handled by artisans trained in Japanese craftsmanship. Their expertise takes our denim to an unmatched level of precision and specificity.

DIFFERENT FROM OTHERS

The beauty in our Made In Japan® collection lies beyond premium fabric and time-honored techniques. What makes it stand out from the rest is its embodiment of Japanese artisan spirit. The decision to produce in limited quantity is deliberate, so that every piece of denim is given its well-deserved attention and care at every stage. It is precisely these dedicated and uncompromising spirit that turns our collection into art, rather than a trade.

We invited two leading opinion leaders in Japanese fashion - W. David Marx (author of “Ametora: How Japan Saved American Style”) and Masataka Hattori (Japan’s pioneering stylist) - to talk about our latest Made in Japan® collection and its concept of “Green is born out of blue”.

W. David Marx

W. David Marx, the author of “Ametora: How Japan Saved American Style”, is an expert in Japanese pop culture and transformation. He systematically and objectively recorded the history of how Japan embraced American culture and created Ametora (Japanese American culture).

Q: What is “Ametora”? How did it start?

A: The word "Ametora" is Japanese compound English. Ametora started when people brought these authentic American style clothing to Japan in the 1960s. And over time, the meaning of "Ametora" has changed more or less. It not only represents the classic American style, but also embodies the better quality in Japanese manufactured products than in traditional American clothing.

Q: Japan has created its own American culture. What impact has this brought to the world?

A: To this day, some of the best American clothing is made in Japan. They are special, detailed, and more fashionable. For example, jeans made in Japan not only surpass the original version but also integrate with global fashion trends, showing the uniqueness and superiority of Japanese manufacturing. So Ametora is not a duplication but rather an improvement with a more beautiful and popular look. This is why I think Ametora is different from the traditional American style.

Q: Why do they say that Levi’s® is the starting point of Japanese denim culture?

A: Japan’s youth culture and their fashion began with the introduction of American style. In the late 1960s, jeans became a very popular clothing item. In 1975, Levi’s® 501® made it to the very first edition of "Made in U.S.A. Catalog". This means that Levi’s® was the most well-known American apparel at the time, and that our Levi’s® 501® was also the golden standard for jeans in Japan. Therefore, Levi’s® has always been the benchmark for jeans manufacturing, and it is also the starting point of Japanese denim culture.

Q: What do you think of “Made in Japan®”?

A: "Made in Japan®" is a very interesting phenomenon. I think what drives it is not just the advanced techniques but the superior craftsmanship behind it. Whether it is the local manufacturer in Japan or the craftsmen in the factory, they have a clear vision of what they want, prompting Levi’s® to produce more innovative products.

Q: How would you define a pair of Levi’s® Made in Japan® jeans?

A: To me, the clothing itself and the meaning behind it always fascinates me. What makes Japan unique is the ability to make these practical, casual and ubiquitous things extraordinary. The reason why I like the Made in Japan® collection is that the jeans are a perfect combination of an authentic American brand made with Japanese denim. Their exquisite craftsmanship and technology embodies the very essence of the Levi’s® brand . With that, these jeans are even more genuine than the original pair, making them "the most authentic jeans."

Masataka Hattori

Masataka Hattori is the leading new-generation stylist in Japan. His unconventional style has been embraced by the fashion industry and Hattori is beloved by many Japanese celebrities and artists.

Q: What impressed you the most as an apprentice of Keita Izuka? After going your own way, what did you do to distinguish your own style?

A: I have learned a lot from Keita Izuka, including personal growth through styling. The biggest lesson I’ve learnt was definitely the way to self-expression. I think personal style is a form of self-identity. There wasn’t anyone supporting me after my apprenticeship and, even though I had partners, I believe this career requires the ability to challenge yourself. Working as a styling assistant, I had always maintained the idea to not accept defeats.

Q: How does American culture affect the Japanese fashion industry? Is American style still popular in Japan today?

A: After the rise of the Harajuku trend and street culture, I think American style has maintained a very popular choice. Japanese American style is quite different in the sense that it is a product of Japanese, transformed by their own interpretation.

Q: What feeling does a delicate, classic yet unassuming Made in Japan® clothing bring to a look?

A: The Made in Japan® is a classic example of Japanese American style to me. Jeans were originally a sturdy and rough clothing item but Made in Japan® gives a refreshed impression of it being clean and neat. It is easy to match with any style of clothing. Compared with traditional jeans, it is not overly masculine and has exquisite contours that make it more high end.

Q: The Made in Japan® collection has always emphasized on "Classic Fit". What are the values behind this?

A: "Classic Fit" can survive any popular trends. When it comes to styling, "Classic Fit" can keep its shape while giving a sculpted look. What makes it special is, when paired with any style and look, the jeans can still stand out and that won’t ever change. “Classic Fit” is exactly as described - it is timeless and permanent, immune to fashion trends years after years. Permanence is my interpretation of “Classic Fit”.

Q: What should we pay attention to when it comes to styling the "Classic Fit" jeans?

A: If you want to show a clear silhouette, you must pay attention to the inseams and waist size. If it’s not measured properly, the jeans will not have a clean impression. I am very particular about sleekness and fitness in the overall look and “Classic Fit” definitely gives a more subtle premium feel to other fits.
